Eelco Dolstra 979117b6b8 Selectively allow /etc files to be disabled 
For instance, if you don't want NixOS to emit /etc/hosts, you
can say:

  environment.etc.hosts.enable = false;

Eelco Dolstra 1daab1ebf5 environment.etc: Add convenience option 'text' 
This allows writing

  environment.etc.hosts.text = "127.0.0.1 localhost";

instead of

  environment.etc.hosts.source = pkgs.writeText "hosts" "127.0.0.1 localhost";

Eelco Dolstra ab238804b8 Turn environment.etc into an attribute set 
This provides a more convenient syntax and allows easier overriding.

For example,

  environment.etc = singleton
    { target = "vconsole.conf";
      source = vconsoleConf;
    };

can now be written as

  environment.etc."vconsole.conf".source = vconsoleConf;

Peter Simons 20b364f4de Reverting revisions 30103-30106: "always set nixpkgs.config.{state,store}Dir", etc. 
After the change from revision 30103, nixos-rebuild suddenly consumed
freaky amounts of memory. I had to abort the process after it had
allocated well in excess of 30GB(!) of RAM. I'm not sure what is causing
this behavior, but undoing that assignment fixes the problem. The other
two commits needed to be revoked, too, because they depend on 30103.

Don't assume /nix/store or /nix/var in NixOS modules, this is configurable

Eelco Dolstra c8d1774f09 * Speed up the initialisation of /etc in the activation script a lot 
by doing it in Perl instead of in Bash.  Forking a zillion times is
  slow.

Eelco Dolstra f729f12e4e Some cleanups in the activation script: 
* Moved some scriptlets to the appropriate modules.
* Put the scriptlet that sets the default path at the start, since it
  never makes sense not to have it there.  It no longer needs to be
  declared as a dependency.
* If a scriptlet has no dependencies, it can be denoted as a plain
  string (i.e., `noDepEntry' is not needed anymore).

Eelco Dolstra 11022e8d9f * Back out r17946 and 17948 because it doesn't work. I've seen it 
fail to update /etc twice now.  It's also unnecessarily complex
  IMHO (see nix-dev).

Eelco Dolstra 6802a75076 * nixos-rebuild: replaced some environment variables with options 
(e.g. --install-grub instead of $NIXOS_INSTALL_GRUB).  Also support
  some nix-build options (e.g. --show-trace and -j).
